The Tiger Shark Joe Barger Science III December 10, 1999 The Tiger shark's name derives from the distinctive dark bands that run from the top of it's back down along it's sides. The stripes are very evident in younger sharks because the stripes start to fade away as it ages, then turning a gray or brownish color. However, all of the Tiger sharks have an off-white ventral surface. The Tiger sharks' scientific name, Galeocerdo cuvier, consists of its Genus, Galeocerdo, and Species, cuvier, names. The Tiger shark belongs to the Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Subphylum Vertebrata, Class Chondrichthyes, and Family Carcharhinidae. Tiger sharks can grow in size up to 20 feet (6m) and in weight 800 pounds. Some Tiger sharks have exceeded these measurements but the average is about 12ft. and 600lbs. Tiger sharks can be found worldwide in tropical waters and most temperate seas. They are most commonly found along the coast of South Africa, the Philippines, Australia, the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and in the Caribbean's. The Tiger shark is quite flexible in tolerating different habitats. They inhabit both the surfaces of shorelines and deep, open waters (up to 500 miles away from shore and 150m deep). A few have been found in rivers and small lagoons. The Tiger shark is second to the Great White in being most feared by humans. They are very strong and fast. They use their powerful caudal fins to swim over 20mph. And they have an excellent sense of smell and keen eyesight. Their teeth are saw-edged, razor-sharp, and curved. Their teeth are located in rows and rotate into place as needed. They replace the broken or worn down teeth in both the lower and upper jaws. Most Tiger sharks swim in deep waters during the day and come to shore to feed during the night. The Tiger shark has earned the nickname the garbage can shark. They will take a bite out of anything and then sees if it likes it. Many shocking objects have been found in the stomachs of Tiger sharks including license plates, a baby goat, a suit of armor, a case of wine, and even a mans body from the chest to the knees. Once, a Tiger shark helped solve a murder for the police. A man was found dead in a river missing his right arm. The police thought he was murdered and dumped into the river. Weeks went by and the case wasn't solved yet until a fishermen discovered an arm in the stomach of a Tiger shark he caught in the same river. The arm matched the dead body and the case was solved. However, Tiger sharks mostly feed on fish, turtles, birds, and other sharks. They are solitary animals except during mating. They are ovoviviparous and their young are born after a gestation period of nine months. They are born live in litters of 10-82 pups. The newborn sharks are 20-30 inches long and completely independent. Tiger sharks migrate seasonally up to 1550 miles. A Tiger shark's life span is unknown but it is thought to be about 30 years. â€Å"Casino Dispute† If you live in the United States of America, does the constitution apply to everyone or just a certain race or group of people? I think that if you live here you must follow the same rules and regulations as every other American citizen or pay the consequences. The Native American people are building casinos on their reservations and are disputing whether or not they have to pay taxes like everyone else. I say they should because there is a popular statement that says, †You only have to do two things in life, pay taxes and die.† And just because our ancestors put them through hard times and killed off a lot of the Indians when they arrived in America doesn’t mean we owe them anything in the 21st century. I think the states that are holding these reservations with the casinos on them should have the right to tax them just as they do the African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasians or whatever race you are. We put the African Americans through a lot more hardships than we ever did the Natives and I strongly disagree with them not having to pay taxes like the rest of us! I am eighteen years old, and I was paying taxes before I became an adult. I know that is their land the government set aside for them to go about their lives on, but they are not even responsible enough to hold down a job. Because the statistics show that 50% of them are unemployed and 73% of them that do work make less than 9,000 a year. To me that is ridiculous because I am responsible enough to get up every morning, go to school and then to work. If they can’t find a job on the reservations getting paid more than that I would find a job with the rest of the population. I would have no problem with them not being taxed if it was on the reservation and only Indians that lived there could gamble, but they are doing this to attract people from all over and make 100% profit. A social problem is a condition that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable. A big social problem in the world told would have to be racism. Some say that racism doesn’t exist but it does. Racism is a very strong word to use I have to say, but there have been a lot of unfairness and discriminations throughout the years in America. Which is what makes me interested in this topic the unfairness people receive from other people because the color of their skin. Some people I know have experienced unfair acts because of the content of their skin. Many people know that racism has occurred in the past when African Americans were treated unfairly being segregated from the opposite race. But most of that changed when people began to fight for equal rights having boycotts, protests, and consistently having those individuals who were racist know that they deserved equal rights as well as they did. And until they receive justice they were going to have their voices heard to receive justice. Racism is just with black people it’s with everybody. Any race can try anything, but there are still going to be those people who just converse with each other about other races. It’s definitely not only the Caucasian race it’s basically every race. The African-American race makes fun of the Caucasian and Latino races. The Latino race makes fun of the Caucasian and African American races. Everybody talks about everybody although it is not right I don’t believe that it will ever stop. I feel there should be a end to it simply because everybody is equal whether we want to believe it or not. So a stop to racism is a must it needs to happen now.
